The short answer

Google’s October 2026 Demand Gen Drop, released October 13, is mostly about data quality. The headline is a new Data Strength Uplift metric in the Google Ads UI that shows how many extra conversions your first-party data setup recovers. Google says advertisers using Google Tag Gateway see over 20% more conversions on average in Demand Gen.

Around the Drop, three more Demand Gen changes landed:

  • Performance-based cost adjustments now last up to 60 days instead of three weeks, which covers the holiday season for campaigns launched by late October.
  • Lookalike segments default to audience suggestions, and Google has documented how to opt out and keep them as a hard targeting constraint.
  • View-through conversions on Display inventory now use a looser view definition, so VTCs will rise. We cover that in a separate post.

Each Demand Gen change explained

1. Data Strength Uplift metric

Data strength is Google’s term for how well your account feeds first-party data into bidding: enhanced conversions, Google Tag Gateway, Customer Match and Data Manager connections. The new Data Strength Uplift metric puts a number on it. It estimates the additional conversions your data setup recovers that standard tagging would miss.

This is useful in two ways. It shows clients why tracking work matters, in conversions rather than jargon. And it helps you spot accounts where tracking gaps are holding performance back.

Google’s supporting numbers: Tag Gateway users see an average conversion uplift of more than 20% in Demand Gen. Insurance comparison site The Zebra reported 16% more conversions and 19% more conversion value after improving its data strength. These are Google-selected examples, so treat them as direction, not a benchmark.

The Drop also confirmed that Data Manager and enhanced conversions are expanding to Display & Video 360 and Google Analytics.

2. Cost adjustments now last up to 60 days

Performance-based cost adjustment is a beta where Google lowers your final cost if a new Demand Gen campaign converts below what the system predicted. It applies to qualifying campaigns on Target CPA or Target ROAS. It used to run for up to three weeks. Google’s documentation now says up to 60 days.

  • It isn’t guaranteed. Eligibility depends on account quality and tracking setup.
  • It may apply only on certain days or to certain campaigns.
  • There’s no credit line item. The adjusted cost just shows in reporting, and can take several days to appear.

The timing matters: a campaign launched by late October can have cover through BFCM and into December.

3. Lookalike segments: suggestions by default, with an opt-out

Since March 2026, Lookalike segments in Demand Gen act as audience suggestions by default rather than strict limits. Google can serve beyond your Lookalike audience if it finds better prospects. In October, Google documented an opt-out form that lets you keep Lookalikes as a targeting constraint. If you opt out, your seed lists together need more than 100 active matched users.

Which to pick: suggestion mode usually finds more volume. Constraint mode keeps reach tight, which suits niche B2B offers, regulated categories, or small budgets that can’t afford broad testing.

Action plan

  1. Check the Data Strength Uplift metric in each account as it appears. Low scores point to quick tracking wins.
  2. Set up Google Tag Gateway if your stack supports it, and confirm enhanced conversions are active.
  3. Launch holiday Demand Gen campaigns now. Late October launches get the longest cost-adjustment window through peak season.
  4. Don’t pause new campaigns too early. Let the learning phase run, since early losses may be partly offset by cost adjustments.
  5. Review every Lookalike segment. Decide per campaign whether suggestion mode or constraint mode fits, and submit the opt-out form where needed.
  6. Annotate reports for the VTC definition change so a rise in view-through conversions isn’t read as better performance.
