Enhanced Conversions for Leads: 2026 Setup and Troubleshooting Guide

How to send qualified-lead and closed-deal data back to Google Ads using hashed form data, updated for the unified enhanced conversions setting introduced in 2026.

Updated September 22, 2026 · 10 min read

What enhanced conversions for leads does

Enhanced conversions for leads is Google’s upgraded version of offline conversion import. When someone submits a lead form on your site, the Google tag captures user-provided data such as an email address or phone number, hashes it, and sends it to Google. Later, when that lead becomes qualified or closes in your CRM, you upload the outcome with the same hashed identifier. Google matches the two and attributes the offline conversion to the original ad click.

Step 1: Capture

The Google tag or Google Tag Manager collects email or phone from the form submission and hashes it.

Step 2: Qualify

The lead moves through your CRM: qualified, opportunity, closed won.

Step 3: Upload

You send the outcome with the hashed identifier through Data Manager or an API.

Step 4: Match

Google matches the identifier to the ad interaction and records the conversion.

Why it matters for bidding

Form fills are not all equal. Uploading qualified leads or closed deals lets Smart Bidding optimize toward the leads that actually become revenue instead of every form submission.

What changed in 2026

DateChange
April 2026Google Ads began accepting enhanced conversions data from website tags, Data Manager and API connections at the same time
June 2026Enhanced conversions for web and for leads were combined into a single feature with one on/off switch
June 15, 2026New API uploads for enhanced conversions for leads move to the Data Manager API; legacy Google Ads API upload paths are being blocked

Accounts that had already accepted the customer data terms were migrated to the unified setting automatically. New accounts need to turn it on manually. The account-level setting lives under Goals → Settings → Customer data use.

Check your integration

If your CRM or middleware sends conversions through the older Google Ads API method, confirm with the vendor that it has moved to the Data Manager API. Then review upload diagnostics to confirm conversions are still being accepted.

Enhanced conversions for leads vs GCLID import

FactorGCLID-based offline importEnhanced conversions for leads
IdentifierGoogle Click ID stored in a hidden form fieldHashed email or phone from the form
CRM changes neededStore the GCLID against every leadStore the email or phone you already collect
Breaks whenGCLID is lost through redirects, cross-domain forms or blocked parametersUsers submit data that does not match their Google account
Google’s recommendationStill supported; include GCLID when availablePreferred method for new setups

You do not have to choose one. Google recommends sending GCLIDs when you have them in addition to hashed user data, because both improve match accuracy.

Setup step by step

1

Turn on enhanced conversions

In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Settings, and open Customer data use. Accept the customer data terms if prompted and turn on enhanced conversions.

2

Choose your tagging method

Select Google Tag Manager, the Google tag, or the API. GTM is the most common choice for lead-gen sites because it can read form fields without code changes.

3

Capture user-provided data on the form

In GTM, create a User-Provided Data variable that reads the email and, if available, phone fields. Attach it to the Google Ads conversion tag or Google tag that fires on the form submission. Automatic detection works on some sites; manual CSS selectors or data layer values are more reliable.

4

Create offline conversion actions

Create conversion actions for the CRM stages you want to measure, such as Qualified Lead and Closed Won, using the import source for CRM or file uploads. Set the stage you want to bid on as primary.

5

Connect the upload source

Use Google Ads Data Manager to connect a supported CRM or scheduled file, or use the Data Manager API for custom integrations. Include hashed email or phone, conversion name, conversion time, and value where relevant.

6

Upload on a regular schedule

Send conversions daily if you can. Late uploads delay the signal to Smart Bidding and can miss the conversion window for that action.

7

Check diagnostics

After 48–72 hours, open the conversion action and review the enhanced conversions diagnostics. Look at coverage, match rates and any formatting warnings.

Data formatting rules

Match rates drop quickly when data is formatted inconsistently between the form capture and the upload. If you hash data yourself before upload, normalize it first.

FieldNormalize before hashingExample
EmailTrim spaces, convert to lowercase John.Smith@Example.com → john.smith@example.com
PhoneConvert to E.164 format with country code, digits only after the plus sign(415) 555-0132 → +14155550132
First / last nameTrim spaces, lowercase, remove punctuation O’Neil → oneil
Hash algorithmSHA-256Hex-encoded output

Let the tag hash when possible

When you use GTM or the Google tag, the tag normalizes and hashes data before sending it. Manual hashing is only needed for API or file uploads where you control the process.

Troubleshooting common errors

Consent and privacy

Only send user-provided data that you are allowed to share under your privacy policy and local law. In regions covered by consent requirements, make sure Consent Mode and your consent banner control when the tag can send data.

Frequently asked questions

What is enhanced conversions for leads?

It is an upgraded form of offline conversion import. It uses hashed user-provided data, such as email or phone from your lead forms, to match offline outcomes like closed deals back to Google Ads clicks.

Do I still need GCLID?

Not strictly, but Google recommends including GCLIDs when you have them. Sending both hashed data and GCLIDs gives the best match accuracy.

What changed with enhanced conversions in June 2026?

Enhanced conversions for web and for leads were combined into one feature with a single on/off switch, and API uploads moved to the Data Manager API.

How long until I see results?

Diagnostics usually show data within 48 to 72 hours of the first tagged submissions and uploads. Bidding impact takes longer because Smart Bidding needs enough offline conversions to learn from.

Should I bid on form fills or qualified leads?

Bid on the deepest stage that still has enough volume. If qualified leads are too few for stable bidding, keep form fills as primary and use qualified leads as a secondary measurement until volume grows.
