Demand Gen View-Through Conversions Are Rising in October 2026: What It Means

The short answer

If your Demand Gen view-through conversions jump this month, your campaigns probably didn’t get better. Google changed the rule for what counts as a “view” on Display ads inside Demand Gen. It used to require the Active View standard. Now a single rendered pixel on screen, for any length of time, qualifies. More impressions qualify, so more conversions get view-through credit.

  • What changed: the view definition for VTC attribution on Demand Gen Display inventory
  • Old rule: Active View viewability
  • New rule: a rendered impression, with at least one pixel shown
  • Effect: higher VTC totals with no change in real results
  • Action needed: none in the account; adjust how you report and compare periods

What changed in view-through conversion reporting

A view-through conversion happens when someone sees your ad, doesn’t click it, and converts later within your view-through window. The ad still has to be “seen” for that credit to count. Google just lowered the bar for “seen” on one slice of inventory.

Google says the goal is consistent VTC measurement across all Demand Gen inventory. The change rolls out automatically. You don’t need to touch any setting.

Why this matters more than it looks

Demand Gen is one of the few places in Google Ads where view-through conversions can be biddable. If you turned on view-through optimization, those conversions sit in your main Conversions column. So a looser definition can change what the bidding system sees, not just your reports.

It also lands while Google is moving Display campaign management into Demand Gen. More Display spend will be measured under this new rule over time.

How to report it to clients and stakeholders

The worst outcome here is a client seeing a VTC spike, assuming the campaign improved, and raising budget on a false signal. Get ahead of it.

  1. Annotate the date. Mark the rollout window in your reports and dashboards. Treat it as a break in the trend line.
  2. Segment by ad event type. Google lets you split conversions into clicks, engaged views and impressions. Report click-through and engaged-view conversions separately from VTCs.
  3. Compare like with like. Don’t compare a September VTC total with an October total as if they use the same rule. Also check your view-through window hasn’t changed between periods.
  4. Watch the supporting metrics. If VTCs rise but clicks, engaged visits and backend sales stay flat, the definition change explains the gap.
  5. Check your primary conversions. If VTCs are biddable in your Demand Gen campaigns, watch CPA and ROAS targets for drift over the next few weeks.
  6. Push for incrementality. For larger accounts, a conversion lift study gives a cleaner answer than attributed VTCs.

A note you can send clients

“Google changed how Display impressions inside Demand Gen qualify for view-through credit. Expect view-through conversions to rise from October. This is a measurement change, not a performance change, so we’re tracking click and engaged-view conversions as the main signal.”

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Demand Gen view-through conversions going up?

Google changed the definition of a view for Display ads in Demand Gen. A rendered impression with one pixel on screen now counts, instead of an Active View impression. More impressions qualify, so VTCs rise.

Does the change affect YouTube ads in Demand Gen?

No. It applies only to Display inventory inside Demand Gen campaigns.

Do I need to change any settings?

No. Google applies the new definition automatically.

Will this affect bidding?

It can, if view-through conversions are biddable in your Demand Gen campaigns. Watch CPA and ROAS closely for a few weeks after the change.

How do I separate view-through conversions from click conversions?

Use the ad event type segment in Google Ads. It splits conversions into clicks, engaged views and impressions.

Are view-through conversions incremental?

Not necessarily. A VTC shows an ad was served before a conversion, not that the ad caused it. Use lift studies for incrementality.
